Overview

The Department of Chemistry is housed in a state-of-the-art facility on Maqam campus. The Chemistry Department offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees including a B.Sc. in Chemistry, B.Sc. in Biochemistry, M.Sc. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Chemistry. The B.Sc. program in Chemistry is accredited by both the Canadian Society for Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry. It is the first B.Sc. program outside the UK to be accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

There are 22 full-time faculty members in the Chemistry Department, all actively engaged in research. Research interests of the faculty cover a broad spectrum of topics from quantum mechanics to materials and environmental chemistry. Much of the research carried out in the Department of Chemistry is aimed to address the needs of the UAE in areas such as health, environment and energy. More than half of the faculty have obtained significant research funding from external sources such as the Emirates Foundation, the National Research Foundation and the Sheikh Hamdan Foundation.

Many modern instruments are available for use by the faculty and students including a spectroscopic, chromatographic and electrochemical instruments.

The Department of Chemistry strives to maintain close links with local schools, companies and government offices to provide consultation, educational assistance and training to UAE organizations.
